Characters Name: Holo
Age: ~600, but she looks to be in her late teens/early 20s
Canon: Spice & Wolf
Canon Point: Chapter 16 (manga) / S1E6 (anime)
Species: Wolf
Gender: Female
Orientation: While Spice & Wolf is a travel story, the overarching story centers around the relationship between Holo and Lawrence. As such, I'd say that Holo prefers men, but it's also not really a concern for her.
History: While this is rather brief, it does cover pretty much everything we know about her background. A long time ago, Holo came south from her homeland of Yoitsu and formed a pact with the people of Pasroe to look over their village and protect their crops. She did so dutifully, but as time went on, she was appreciated and worshiped less and less, until she decides to accompany Lawrence for the duration of the series to return to her home!
Appearance: Here!
Personality:
Everyone wants to have a purpose, to be wanted and needed. This is a truth that doesn’t change even for an old and wise wolf. That is why she decided to stay far from her homeland to watch over the crops of a village, and that is why she decided to leave it when they no longer believed in her worth. While Holo is something close to a deity, it hardly means she’s without flaws or worries, and honestly, without her ears and tail, it would be easy to believe that she’s a fairly normal girl.
The first thing that someone would notice about Holo is her unmistakably playful personality. She’s easy-going and prone to gentle teasing and jokes, loves to eat good food and drink good alcohol, and she will often comment on humans’ odd, silly ways as compared to wolves. She’s friendly, warm, and sociable, and easy to make friends with. She’s the kind of person who brightens a room by being there, since to those she’s comfortable with, she’s generally a very happy person. Holo is also sometimes flirty, though it’s all for the sake of playful teasing, much to the chagrin of anyone at the receiving end of it. She’s also a very loyal and caring person, and will help and protect those precious to her without faltering at all.
In the series, this is the side of Holo we see mostly around Lawrence, so it’s worth noting that there is another side to her presented personality, though it may not matter in Holly Heights. Since the world of Spice & Wolf is a medieval society transitioning from paganism to Christianity, Holo would be considered a demon or a symbol or something blasphemous. As such, she has to hide her tail and ears, and also presents herself quite differently around those that don’t know what she is. She’s still playful to a degree, but not as much, tending to stick to clever plays on words and eloquence to express herself. She’s more cautious and subdued, preferring to let others speak than to speak up herself, since she’s simply avoiding the danger of being discovered. In game, this part of her personality would likely present itself early in the game, but once she realized that no one cares, it would be dropped for her “true” personality.
However, this part of her personality does illustrate her shrewd ways best. Her playful personality could easily give off the impression of being a bit air-headed, but she’s not at all. Holo is extremely wise and intelligent, which is why Lawrence brought her along for the trip initially at all. She has a very sharp mind, capable of analyzing a situation accurately and quickly, and is especially good at reading people. She’s a fast learner too, easily picking up the subtleties of the economy so that she can aid Lawrence. That’s not to say that her intelligence isn’t without fault—Holo does often get confused by human inventions and their ways, since she often compares them to the simpler ways of wolves. She can be a bit haughty about this difference, but for the most part, she just has to take the time to learn, even if she may ultimately still think it’s unusual.
So far, this builds Holo up as a person without flaw, and really, that’s how she’d like you to see her. She is the Wise Wolf Holo, a great and clever wolf who only concerns herself with things like when her mug of mead is empty. But of course, it’s not so simple. Holo has many insecurities that she would prefer to keep hidden, since she considers them embarrassing and unbefitting of her. One of the greatest ones we see is that Holo deeply fears being alone and unneeded. This is what starts the story, but even later as she is captured by the church, she’s more frightened of being left alone and abandoned than possibly dying. She’s a very lonely person, and truly fears returning to her homeland and finding no one there, but also the fact that her life is so long in comparison to humans. She knows that she’ll outlive Lawrence easily, and the thought frightens her. In addition, she’s also rather self-conscious about her being a wolf at times, since it does frighten humans. She’s a very gentle-hearted person, so she would never hurt someone until cornered, but of course, that’s hard to believe when you’re standing before an enormous wolf.
Overall, Holo is a friendly, warm, and bubbly person. She’s a truly loyal and shrewd friend, and an excellent person to have standing by your side. She may joke and tease, but she greatly values her relationships with others, and will fiercely guard them as well. However, for all of these things, she’s still an insecure person underneath it all, fearing loneliness more than anything.
Abilities:
While she's taking a cute, mostly human form, Holo is still ultimately a very large wolf, and all of her abilities center around this fact. She's able to shift into her wolf form, but to do so, she must eat the wheat she "resides" in, and this form is quite strong and fast, as well as being probably like 15 feet tall.
However, she's very reluctant to shift into this form anyways, so her other skills are related to things that she can do in her human form. Her hearing is most notable, since it's so sensitive that she can sense when someone is lying. She also has a heightened sense of smell, but not to the level of her hearing.
It's not an ability, but to explain more about the wheat! Because of the pact that she made in Pasroe, to leave the village, she had to essentially store her spirit in a bushel of wheat cut in a festival. She keeps the grains in a small pouch, and this is the source of her life, basically. If this were to, say, burn, Horo would die.
Other:
Just out of curiosity, but would Holo be able to keep abilities like her enhanced senses? Not for the one to be able to tell lies from truth, obviously, but since everything else is enhanced to a natural wolf's level, she would have a higher sense of hearing and smell than humans, for example. If not, no big deal, but I thought I would ask.

First Person: a dear_mun post
Third Person:
When she awakes, it's rather lazily.
Feeling the warmth of the sun in comparison to the coolness of the grass is a welcome comfort. Though she's beginning to wake from what feels like a deep sleep, she stretches languidly and rolls over, trying to prolong that comfort. It doesn't occur to her that this is different from where she had gone to sleep yet, because her mind is still clouded by sleepiness. This feeling is nostalgic, reminiscent of the naps that she would take during Yoitsu's summers, so it's a comfort. Her tail swishes in the grass until it flops over her so that she can hug it closer, humming lowly in enjoyment.
It's hugging her tail that reminds her.
Burying her very human fingers into the soft fur of her tail reminds her that she's taken a human form and that she can't be lounging in Yoitsu's mountains. Her eyes open wide as she sits up, looking around.
"Law....rence?" she calls her companions name out lightly, but not recognizing anything about this place at all, she tries again, a bit more alarmed, "Lawrence! ...Goodness, you can't have gone into town without me, have you?"
But it's just a small justification as if to calm her worries, because as she looks around, she knows that none of this is familiar. The houses here look nothing like the ones she's seen in any city they've been to. Her ears flatten against her head in worry, and she turns to look back at the house behind her.
...Just where was she?
